In February of 2020, I used CNN 5 Things email in the classroom as a discussion piece and quick write warm-up. Coronavirus was something happening in a country on the other side of the world.

A month later, on March 11th, the Houston Rodeo canceled the rest of the season of concerts and carnival fun. Coronavirus was something happening in a country on the other side of the world… but the rodeo? Houston’s sacred spring event?
This is how I knew it was real. This is how I knew to be scared.

Last night, on March 1, I attended the rodeo with my teacher bestie who was gifted tickets to watch Keith Urban.
It was weird. It was funny. It felt good.
Below is a picture Ms. Garcia captured of me Googling “breakaway roping” because “WOW. That teacher life, Decker. You’re conducting RESEARCH at the rodeo?! The national rules of… Wow.”

Love this! Have been talking with my students about my feelings about March being here since it’s when the world changed two years ago, and last year it was a frantic race to get vaccinated to see loved ones. Glad you could reflect on it all and have a bit of closure!

It seems that something becomes real when it hits close to home and disrupts our normalcy.

Research is everywhere…even at the rodeo! How did we ever do anything without our phones?!?
