Queen of Tejano Music: #SOLSC21

On this last day of 31 blog posts, I had a list of possibilities for saying goodbye. I thought about an “awards show” post to celebrate favorite posts of mine that I wrote over the last month. I considered a goodbye poem. Another option was a letter to myself; I did this thing, dang it!

But I don’t really like the idea of saying goodbye. I plan to see you next week Tuesday anyway, right?! Instead, I end today celebrating La Reina, as well as…an awkward moment.

I am forever playing coffee house music on low volume while F2F students work once the Zoom meeting ends. Today, however, marks 26 years since Selena was murdered. In the mourning/celebratory spirit, I decided to play Selena songs. With the door wide open. On repeat. Loudly.

Why was today the one day my building principal walked in for a mask/dress code check – the one day Room N223 sounds like a Tejano club, y’all?!

I would like to believe the entire hallway is enjoying the Selena serenade, particularly during passing periods. In all seriousness, I am ending an incredible feat of blogging for 31 days straight – I have never completed a writing goal like this. All of your posts inspired me, all of your comments made me smile – some made me actually cry.

It feels fitting to be celebrating La Reina’s life and empowering spirit on the same day I am celebrating my multifaceted identity of mija, esposa, mami, maestra, mujer. Thank you for sharing your stories, slicers. Thank you for providing this space, TWT!

  1. Building principals have a 6th sense for those sorts of things. HA! Sounds like a good celebration, honoring those who inspired you and celebrating your achievements as well.

  2. It’s all a matter of timing, isn’t it? 🙂

It’s been great reading your material over the last month (and earlier, of course). I’m looking forward to seeing your post again next week!

This is what happens when I'm in a mood and my morning music is very loud and angry. The principal or a co-worker walks in, a raised eyebrow, and a "are you really ok" look on their face. It is quite comical! 🙂

I'm glad to have gotten to "know" you on your slices! I appreciate your passion for your students, your family, and soccer! 🙂 I hope we see you on Tuesdays!

  4. I LOVE this. And I think principals need to come in to scenes like that MORE often. Let them see our classrooms in all their joy, their chaos, their splendor. If they’re worth their salt, they’ll shrug their shoulders, roll their pride into a ball, and dance along with y’all.
